The unlicensed use of professional sound design, sound effects libraries and recordings — to train AI or create media — unjustly threatens the livelihoods of the people and companies who have devoted their careers to the craft of sound.

The industry’s most trusted names stand together.

Representing millions of professional sound recordings, decades of craft, and the world’s leading libraries.

Sound effects are not a commodity. They are the product of human expertise, human experience, and human artistry. They deserve the same protection as any other creative work.

Audio has three pillars. Two are protected. One isn’t.

01 Music
Represented by labels, the RIAA, and performing-rights bodies. Licensing frameworks have existed for decades.
02 Voice
Represented by SAG-AFTRA and performers’ unions. Vocal rights are well-established in law and practice.
03 SFX = Everything Else
Every film, game, broadcast, video, and AI model is built on three categories of audio: music, voice, and everything else. These are the footsteps, the thunder, the engines, the rain, the weight of a closing door — the most ubiquitous sounds in media and the least protected. It has never had a unified voice. That changes here.

Heard everywhere.
Taken for granted.

Sound is often ignored precisely because it’s done well. That is, when the work is good, you stop noticing it. But that does not mean it has no value and should not be protected like other categories of IP. A single professional sound effect is the result of expert field recording, hours of editing, meticulous human description and curation. The professional sound designers behind your favorite films, shows and games have dedicated their careers to sonic craftsmanship.

That work is currently taken without permission in two primary ways:

· Data Piracy: sound effects and sound design being scraped into commercial AI models
· Synch Piracy:  Sounds and entire libraries being used in films, shows, games, and other audiovisual media without a license.

Different methods, same theft. This threatens the livelihoods not only of individuals who’ve dedicated their lives to professional sound, but the entirety of the industries and institutions built around recording, developing, and elevating the art and craft professional sound.

We’re signing our names to start saying the quiet part out loud: our craft has value, and it deserves to be treated as such.
